Kick Off Your Career in FootballKick Off Your Career in FootballFootball is like life it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority. Vince LombardiIn the world of football, Vince Lombardi is a name that stands out for his achievements and his pursuit of excellence. Lombardis famous words of motivation have been used worldwide not only for on-the-field encouragement but also as life and career lessons. This Thursday as the most popular sport in America kicks off we at Simply Hired would like to to show how a love for football can turn into a job or career.Stadium personnelThere are many jobs that allow you to work near sporting fests and enjoy the game atmosphere while you earn money. There are over 220 stadiums in the U.S. that hold over 20,000 people and each stadium employsliterally hundreds of people for each event. Jobs include usher, food service worker, customer service, schachtel office service and more. Have you ever notice d when the concession stand staff is really nice and in a good mood? Theres a reason for that.ScoutThis isnt a job for amateurs that dont know the game. If you can read a screen or bootleg as quickly as the guys on the field and recognize a good 40 when you see it, scouting high school and college players is a great career to consider. As a football scout youll have to the opportunity to attend games, practices and workouts and get paid for observing the possible value a football player can bring to the team.RefereeMuch like the football scout, refereeing isnt a job for the armchair coach. Those who saw any of ref strike in 2012 know exactly what I mean. Football moves fast. If you know the rules and keep up with the pace of the game, working as a referee at any level can be a lot of fun.Referees, of course, have the responsibility of being impartial and maintaining the integrity of the game.Sporting Goods Store EmployeeA great job off the field, sporting goods store employees know t he pros and cons of each brand of equipment, style, etc. If you want to make sure the athletes out on the field are equipped with best gear, consider working at a sporting good store. This is a retail job that allows you to work near athletes.GroundskeeperThis is a great job where the staff is responsible for creating and maintaining the majestic sight that is the playing field. While groundskeeping during football season can require you to deal with a bit of snow, ice and sleet, this can be a great year-round job with soccer, baseball and other field sports. Not to mention golf.Youth CoachImagine sharing your love of football every day with a rapt audience of impressionable youngsters who are eager to soak it all up. As a youth football coach, you will not only be able to play and teach the sport but also instill lifelong values of dedication and teamwork while promoting physical fitness. If you like being outside and around kids, then this job could be the perfect fit for you. Coach ing is also a great part-time opportunity that allows you to maintain your full-time job.Event ManagerThe silent heroes of any sporting event are the event managers who ensure that the game goes smoothly and as planned without unnecessary interruption. Responsible for coordinating facilities, catering, signage, displays, monitoring budgets and ensuring legal compliance, event managers must have organizational skills and an impressive attention to detail. If you love being around the hustle and bustle of professional sports, then consider becoming one of the behind-the-scenes logistics masters who ensure that all of the moving parts of a sporting match are managed effectively.Personal TrainerPerhaps you love the physical nature of sports more than the game itself. If this is the case, consider becoming a certified personal trainer. Without the support and guidance of physical fitness trainers, professional athletes would be unable to perform at the high level that makes football so i mpressive to watch. Good personal trainers are always in demand and are invaluable to athletes and non-athletes, too. This job is perfect for active and outgoing personalities who want to make a large personal impact in someones life.Sports BroadcasterConsider becoming a sports broadcaster if you are an avid sports fan who always seems to know random sports facts and enjoys being in front of the camera. Those who excel in this position are outgoing and diligent in their interest and study of sports trivia and history. Maybe youll be the next Jim Nantz.PE TeacherIf you like working with kids and enjoy sports and physical activity but are looking for a permanent position, consider becoming a licensed Physical Education teacher. While youll still have the opportunity to join in the athletic challenges and enjoy the outdoors, youll also be responsible for maintaining student attendance, grades and other records. This article welches co-written by Simply HiredsCait Finningan and Robert Me yer, a pair of San Francisco 49ers fans.

This map shows where freelancers get more bang for their buck

This map shows where freelancers get more bang for their buckThis map shows where freelancers get more bang for their buckFreelancing is on the rise.Fast Company reports that 55 million Americans worked as freelancers last year, and the Pew Research Center recently found that 24% of all Americans moonlight in some sort of capacity. Since more people are ditching traditional corporate jobs and striking out on their own, its worth asking How much money do freelancers need to make to enjoy a reasonable standard of living? We created a new map to find out.We decided to take graphic designers as representative of freelancing. After all, many different types of businesses engage unterstellung folks on an on-and-off basis whenever they need projects done. We made a couple reasonable assumptions about their lifestyle (single adult with no children) and living expenses (moderate food budget and a 1,000-square foot apartment - which is a good sized one-bedroom in most cities). The data are pa rt of our cool True Cost of Living project - check it out here. We took these annual expenditures and compared them to the median income graphic designers make around the country. Large green dots indicate a nice wertzuwachs, but red dots mean the location is unaffordable. You can immediately see how freelancers can make ends meet in almost every city. From Seattle to Miami, our map has far more green than red dots. People working gigs on a full-time basis have a good chance of enjoying a sizeable surplus month after month. Remember, our figures apply only for single adults with no children. If you bring kids into the mix, the budget looks a lot different. There are a handful of notable exceptions, however. San Francisco and New York, two of the most expensive cities in the U.S., are simply out of reach for most freelancers. Boston is similarly on the pricey side. The only unaffordable cities located away from the coasts are Austin and Nashville, both of which are well known as trend y places for young people to live. So where are the best places for freelancers to live? (with the money left over at the end of the year).Top 10 Best Places for FreelancersSpokane, WA $32,641North Las Vegas, NV $25,277Las Vegas, NV $24,917Henderson, NV $21,193Reno, NV $20,837Buffalo, NY $19,786Jacksonville, FL $18,812Fort Worth, TX $17,968Laredo, TX $16,048Newark, NJ $14,989All in all, our analysis demonstrates that freelancers stand a very good chance of making enough money to survive. More than that, all things being equal, they should have at least some money left over at the end of the year. That is, if they live in an affordable city.Do you need more info about our data? How To Turn Data Into Profits

How To Turn Data Into Profits Ready to talk data? (Its one of the highest paying careers out there you know...) Join us today at 3pm EST with Dr. Denise Daniels, a behavioral data scientist and VP of Data Science & AI Consulting for Horizon Consumer Science to learn mora SIGN UP bit.ly/2unv4iQ One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the brde time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives leuchtdiode to better business performance and pro blem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned a n average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Why most people will never be successful

Why most people will never be successfulWhy most people will never be successfulSuccess isnt just having lots of money. Many people with lots of money have horribly unhappy and radically imbalanced lives.Success is continuously improving who you are, how you live, how you serve, and how you relate. So why wont most people be successful? Why dont most people evolve? The mora evolved you become, the more focused you must be on those few things which matter most. Yet, as Jim Rohn has said, A lot of people dont do well simply because they major in minor things. To be successful, you cant continue being with low frequency people for long periods of time. You cant continue eating crappy food, regardless of your spouses or colleagues food choices.Your days must consistently be spent on high quality activities. The more successful you become - which is balancing the few essential things (spiritual, relational, financial, physical) in your life and removing everything else - the less you can just ify low quality. As Greg McKeown has said, You canbedrngnis overestimate the unimportance of practically everything. Before you evolve, you can reasonably spend time with just about anyone. You can reasonably eat anything placed in front of you.You can reasonably justify activities and behaviors that are, frankly, mediocre. As your vision for yourself expands, you realize you have to make certain adjustments. You need to cut back on spending all of your money and time on crap and entertainment. You have to save more, and invest more in your education and your future. The more successful you become, the less you can justify low quality. The more focused you must become. The more consistently your daily behaviors must be high quality - and increasingly higher quality. This isnt about perfection. Its definitely not about being busy all the time. Actually, the balance of true success involves what Tim Ferriss calls mini-retirements or regular sabbaticals.Yet, if your daily behaviors are con sistently low quality, what do you expect your lifes output to be?Your choices must become higher quality.Your relationships must become higher quality.Every area of your life affects every other area of your life. Hence the saying, How you do anything is how you do everything. This is very high level thinking. It only makes sense for people who have removed everything from their lives they hate. To actually live this principle your daily and normal life can only be filled with those things you highly value. When your days are filled with only those core essentials that mean the world to you - and youre succeeding in those few areas - you absolutely will dominate in all areas of your life. Because the only things in your life are the things you highly value. Everything else has slowly been weeded-out. You are living intentionally and congruently. You have momentum and balance. Youre being who you truly want to be, every single day.To actually do this not only takes time, but is ext remely hard to live in practice.Saying No to great but irrelevant opportunities is hard.Giving up bad habits is hard.Changing your belief system and expanding your vision takes courage. Its so easy to revert back to small and mediocre thinking. However, as you come closer to living on a daily basis with your values and ideals, amazing things abflug to happen. Youll feel happier. Youll be more present with those you love. Youll spend your time better. Youll pursue bigger dreams and ambitions. Youll be more resilient during challenges. Youll live at a higher frequency. And everything around you will reflect that. But to repeat Jim Rohn, A lot of people dont do well simply because they major in minor things. Said another way, most people are caught in the thick of thin things.Hence, most people wont be successful. Most people wont evolve and progress. But you will. You know it, and you can feel it. Youve already begun. And everyday, youre taking one step closer.Soon enough, youll fully co mmit to being who you know you can be. Once you pass that point of no return, nothing will stop you.Ready to upgrade?Ive created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. You follow this daily, your life will change very quickly.Get the cheat sheet hereThispostfirst appeared on Medium.

Make your resume more like a blockbuster movie

Make yur resume mora like a blockbuster movieMake your resume more like a blockbuster movieDid you ever wonder what it is about all those blockbuster movie posters that pull you right in from the first minute? Well, whatever it is, its something you should strive for on your resume according to experts.Like a movie poster or the first trailer you see, employers are looking at your resume as a first impression, says Talmar Anderson ofBoss Actions. And like a good movie catchphrase, your objective statement needs to tell me if I want to buy your ticket. So, how can you make your resume more tempting at first glance? Catch their interest from the first minute. Here are a few examplesGo big (or small)Anderson says that looking for lages with advancement opportunities, reads to me as someone looking for a larger company with already defined career path progression and promotions. Looking to join a team where my contribution can make a difference, reads as someone that wants to be in a sma ller company to allow for ease of recognition and a higher probability of customer engagement/feedback.She explains that employers start with a consideration of what works in the role and specifically within a company. A standout objective that aligns with my company and the available position will go on my gotta see listBlockbuster tipResearch your audience and write in a way that attracts their interest even if it means tweaking your resume before every single interview.Be more memorableSure movies with easy to remember names (everything Harry Potter) or superheroes like Wonder Woman are easy to remember. Then again, a movie called Jumanji was a huge blockbuster success for Robin Williams in 1995 and again for The Rock in 2017. Im guessing the executive who initially pitched the title got a lot of side eye. Along those lines, Sean Pathiratne is the CEO Founder of a new kind of furniture company Gjemeni has both a distinctive name and company name. He explains that memorability c omes from distinction, and we have that in both our product and our name.Pathiratne says Our couch was designed to be different and that is at the core of our marketing. We like to say A couch should do more than just sit there. Other couches do just that they are static. Impassive. For that reason, he builds on the difference, the other, the intrigue.Pathiratne also reminds us that many classic consumer names that are now in the conversation were tough to pronounce originally consider Stella Artois, Adidas, Saucony, even Givenchy.Blockbuster tipEven if your last name is Smith, try to find a way to distinguish yourself so that your full name or body of experience becomes part of your branding.Tell a storyIf your career trajectory is slightly bumpy and jumps between jobs, try to find a way to create a connecting narrative. For Pathiratne that includes focusing on finding the next opportunity. When meeting new people I take them on the same intellectual journey that I went on, the o ne that brought me to Gjemeni. Thats my advice to others. Be a natural storyteller.Blockbuster tip Consider gaps in your resume as leading to the sequel. After all, there was a gap of 29 years and 309 days between Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and the more recent Mad Max Fury Road which was female-led and grossed $378.90 million.Add your special skillsHave you reconsidered going to see a film at an ordinary theater in favor of one with Imax? Try to use those marketing moves in your own resume.Tricia Brouk is an award-winning director, writer, filmmaker and the executive producer of TEDxLincolnSquare. Brouk regularly reviews resumes and noticed one thing No one in corporate includes special skills and if they did, they would stand out.She explains that In addition to wanting to know your experience and education, we want to know who you are. If we knew that you were an expert hula-hooper or that you make a mean gazpacho, we learn something about you that makes you stand out from the res t. This gives me clues about the entire you, because ultimately, we want to like the people we work with.Blockbuster tip Its not always appropriate to include quirky details, but sometimes that one interesting thing will get you in the door.

From The Riveter to The Coven to The Hivery to Quilt but arguably the most famous one is The Wing.Started in 2016 by former political strategist/sometimes actress and the superbly well-connected Audrey Gelman, the women’s only club caught everyone’s attention with its perfectly Instagrammable interiors and the promise of a safe space for women to create and thrive in right before the 2016 election. This past November, The Wing raised $32 million in Series B funding from WeWork and New Enterprise Associates. In addition to its inaugural Flatiron location, it has opened offices in SoHo, Brooklyn and Washington D.C. with plans to expand nationwide. With a waiting list of 8,000 women and the launch of other similar clubs, clearly, women’s coworking spaces are no trend. However, they may be finding themselves in hot water soon as this week Jezebel  reported  that the New York City Commission on Human Rights (NYCCHR) was investigating The Wing for its compliance with anti-discrimination laws as the club does not allow men anywhere on its premises. Many of The Wing’s members took to Twitter to vehemently protest the investigation (to be clear, it is not a lawsuit.)Melissa Murray,  a professor of law at UC Berkeley who’s currently teaching at NYU, told Jezebel, “I think it’s patently absurd for New York’s human rights commission to be focusing on the Wing when we’ve had, over the last six months, numerous complaints about workplaces being absolutely hostile to women in terms of pervasive and endemic sexual harassment. Leaving aside the fact that so many workplaces seem to be rife with incidents of sexual harassment, now, after #MeToo, I think there are a lot of men in positions of authority who are going to be really skeptical and afraid to mentor women, and that might make a space like this even more necessary.”Though these spaces were created to be safe havens for women to work as many coworking spaces like WeWork have a reputation for being very male-dominated you do have to question if this exclusivity is violating the law?On the other hand, this investigation could seem a bit tone deaf in light of the various events and campaigns that have launched in the past year.Grace Kraaijvanger, founder of The Hivery, which is headquartered  in Mill Valley, Calif., with plans to expand, told Ladders, “Spaces with feminine energy offer us an invaluable support system and community through which we can feel more motivated, more productive, more focused and, therefore, more empowered to use the whole of our voice and our talents to realize our fullest potential.”As for whether these spaces are discriminating against men Kraaijvanger said, “The Hivery is a female-fueled inspiration lab and coworking space built on kindness, community, and creativity. While dedicated to  unleashing the unique potential and elevating the voice of e very woman, The Hivery is an inclusive gathering place where all human beings are welcome, and a dynamic group of entrepreneurs, creatives, and seekers create meaningful work, form lasting connections, and pursue their  What’s Next.”Quilt also is open to men attending their coworking sessions and focus groups, which take place in various women’s homes. However, The Wing does not allow men on the property so it is slightly different, but as of now is unlikely that this will turn into a lawsuit. As of now, The Wing and the NYHRCC have only  Ã¢€œmutually agreed to have a conversation.”On the plus side Hooters in Japan is making a campaign to be the next great coworking space. The Hooters in Tokyo’s Ginza neighborhood will make 20 spots available to freelancers, entrepreneurs, and other people that work remotely during the day, according to Travel Leisure. The restaurant chain has partnered with  Spacee, a Japanese space rental app, for this collaboration. Spacee reps wrote in a press release that Hooters was chosen  because working in an unconventional space encourages “new discoveries” and “innovative ideas.”Ahh, yes, Hooters: Where innovative ideas are born.  So don’t worry ladies, if The Wing closes, there is always Hooters.

How to use the first five minutes of networking to impress

How to use the first five minutes of networking to impress How to use the first five minutes of networking to impress Anyone who saw the news story about the Facebook data breach likely had the same reaction.“Sigh, of course that happened.”Who today is surprised at a massive data leak? Maybe the Target credit card debacle gave you pause. Or the Equifax breach. But now? Security breakdowns are so common we can only shake our heads.Excuse me while I seek credit monitoring services forever. The predictable is painful. That goes for data breaches and how we interact with one another. You know what happens at a happy hour when you talk and talk?Ladders is now on SmartNews!Download the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.The other people stand around and think “Sigh, of course that happened.” They become bored while you dominate the conversation. That’s why, in the first five minutes of any conversation, the smartest networkers do what no one expects: they only ask questions.Yep, the best small talkers play the role of reporter and ig nore their own back-stories. How? They use the six most powerful words in networking. I include two of those “powerful” words in bold down below.Smart networker: “Where do you work?”Person: “I’m a sales rep for iHeartRadio.”Smart networker: “Oh, cool. What’s it like to work there?”Person: “It’s a pretty cool place. We often get tickets to free concerts and access to new music.”Smart networker: “That’s pretty sweet. What shows have you seen recently?”Person: “Well, let’s see. Back in December I saw … ”You ask a question. And then another. And then another. You’ll get to your own life soon enough. Stay in the moment.Watch what happens as the conversation ensues.Smart networker: “Wow, you get to see all kinds of cool concerts. Do you have to work at the shows too?”Person: “Yea, at the show in December, I had to work the merchandise table because the company who usually handles that service dropped the ball at the last minute, and now we†™re looking for another partner.”Smart networker: “Oh, interesting. You know I work for a staffing agency and we provide employees for short-term gigs like that.”Person: “Oh, really? Email me tomorrow and I’ll put you in touch with our HR director.”Do you see my point? If you remain laser focused on the other person, you will take the conversation WAY beyond “What’s your name?” and “Where do you work?” Now you’re in the “opportunity realm” where a meaningful conversation can lead somewhere substantial.OK. Time’s up! We reached five minutes into a networking conversation. Now what?If you want talk further, you have two options:1. Wait for the person to say “OK, enough about me. Tell me about you.” That’s always best. You spent ample time in question mode, and now it’s your turn to dish out some answers.2. The person might NEVER say “Tell me about you.” We’ve all met that guy or girl. Clueless to the world. When the person gives you a break i n the conversation, interject with your own info.“That’s a cool story. It reminds me of a situation at my job … ”Here’s the bottom line:Whether you have the chance to tell your life’s story or not, you already got what you came for, so to speak. You (nicely) interrogated someone else, gained knowledge you didn’t have and perhaps found a way to network further. All from the first five minutes. All because you asked questions. This  column  first appeared on  DannyhRubin.com.

7 Ways Successful People Manage to Stay Ahead

7 Ways Successful People Manage to Stay Ahead 7 Ways Successful People Manage to Stay Ahead Success is rarely achieved overnight. And once it’s finally achieved, holding on to that success can take an incredible amount of control, hard work, and discipline. But how exactly do successful people manage to stay ahead ? Is there some top secret manual that only they know about? And do you have to achieve success to get access to this secret? The answer is yes and no. Successful people do have similar habits that keep them ahead of the rest at all times. You can call this their manual. However, this manual is in no way secret, because countless successful people have shared this information time and time again. I won’t make you wait any longer, let’s jump right into the 7 ways successful people manage to stay ahead. We all know that Mark Zuckerberg wears a grey t-shirt to work every single day . His reason for this daily routine is to eliminate unnecessary decision making and instead, focus primarily on work. Richard Branson, the Virgin Airlines boss, wakes up at 5:00am every day so he can spend quality time with his family. Warren Buffett spends about 80% of his day reading, and it’s through this practice that he credits his long-term investment success. You might not have the luxury of reading almost all day every day, but you do have the capacity for adopting a new routine . Successful people take up daily routines in order to form structure and plan out every single minute of their day. Without a routine, a lot of time may fly by trying to think of what to do next. And time wasted is success delayed. If you read autobiographies of successful people, you’ll notice a pattern of goal-setting. They start by setting long term goals, and then break down each of these goals into short term daily goals. By doing so, they ensure that every single second of their day is catered for and there is a task to complete. After a certain period of achieving daily goals, a long term goal that seemed unachievable starts to become achievable. And once achieved, they repeat the same cycle over and over. This then makes it easy for successful people to stay ahead as they attain more success along the way. 3. They capitalize on emotional intelligence The most successful people have mastered and achieved a high emotional intelligence level. In fact, research has shown that 90% of top performers score highly on emotional intelligence, as compared to only 20% of low performers. Successful people understand that being emotionally stable leads to a clear mind and hence more informed decision making. They’re efficient at communication, time management, stress tolerance, decision-making and anger management, among others. All of which are great factors for success. 4. They don’t believe failure is final The most successful people know better than to let failure be the ultimate result. Bill Gates attributes embracing failure as the reason Microsoft became successful in it’s early years. Oprah Winfrey attributes her debut as a TV Show host to her being fired earlier in life. And the late Steve Jobs achieved great success after being fired from his own company. While you may view failure as a setback and spend days on end sad and depressed, successful people shake off the dust and move on. They work to learn from each failure and continue to become a better version of themselves. It is through this mindset that most successful people keep piling on successes. 5. They constantly educate themselves As I mentioned earlier, Warren Buffett spends the larger part of his day reading books, newspapers and financial documents. He advises aspiring investors to do the same as it is “how knowledge works”. Bill Gates reads at least one book every week, Oprah Winfrey is a renowned advocate for reading wide and Mark Cuban sets aside three hours every day to read. Those who can’t read books, listen to audio books. The point is to stay educated about what’s happening, how things works and keeping your mind engaged. This is how successful people manage to stay one step ahead. They ask the right questions , accumulate knowledge and use it when making life changing decisions and structuring their life. 6. They are sensitive of who they spend time with “You are the average of the 5 people you spend your time with.” Simple as this may be, the most successful people are avid followers of this phrase, and make time to hang around people they trust to inspire, challenge and motivate them. In fact, if you’re not offering any type of growth or benefit to their lives, you’re better off at a distance. In a five year study conducted on the daily habits of successful people, it emerged that 80% prefer to spend time with other success-minded people. The study concluded that people are as successful as the people they associate with. 7. They have multiple income streams Successful people are very big on making investments to secure different sources of income. They understand that one stream of income can halt, at any moment and without warning. Adding a new income stream can as simple as starting an online business and learning how to grow their audience , but no matter what they do, successful people make sure to have several backup strategies. Multiple sources of income ensure that successful people remain on top at all times, even when one side of business is not functioning accordingly. And Warren Buffet, the king of investments, advises people to never depend on one source of income. Successful people manage to stay ahead because they understand the winning game. They’ve been through difficult times and lived through easy times. For this reason, they know what works, what doesn’t and what’s worth paying attention to. Looking for more ideas like this? 3 Ways to Line Up Reliable Job References

3 Ways to Line Up Reliable Job References 3 Ways to Line Up Reliable Job References 3 Ways to Line Up Reliable Job References You may be effective at selling yourself to an employer, but have you lined up former bosses and ex-colleagues who can back up what you have to sell? That's why you need references. Employers want to be sure they're hiring the right person before they make a big investment that will cost thousands of dollars in pay and benefits. Think about it for a minute: When you want to make a major purchase, you probably do some research and look for reviews from satisfied customers before you decide. But finding reviews on potential new hires is not that easy for an employer. The question is: How do you get people to be your references? Here are three ways: Just ask. Before you start your job search, think of three to six people with whom you worked closely and who saw you at your best. Contact them, tell them you're looking, and ask them if you can offer their names and contact information as references. If they say they're happy to do it, (you don't want them to agree grudgingly; that's how negative references happen), let them know the type of position you're seeking and the skills and qualifications you'll be selling as part of your search strategy. You want someone who remembers how you used those skills and qualifications and would feel comfortable discussing them with the person who wants to hire you. Get it in writing. This can be more valuable than just a name, title, and contact information. If you can present the hiring manager with a letter from one of your references about their experiences working with you, it will likely be read before the hiring manager calls the reference to learn more about you (or the letter can take the place of the typical reference call). If you're a new college graduate without experience in your chosen field, having one or two letters from professors can help. Look to LinkedIn.Bank on the fact that the employer will go beyond your references and scour the web for more information (good or bad) about you. If you have a LinkedIn profile (and you should), you have a golden opportunity to get current and former colleagues to write and post recommendations to your profile. As LinkedIn gains more value as an online networking site for professionals, recommendations make your profile more valuable. (Jason Alba of JibberJobber.com offers helpful adviceon this topic.) Just remember that you should also be giving recommendations for others since reciprocation is important when you're networking. One more important tip: Give your references a heads-up once you have an interview lined up. You should also tell them about the job, the company, the aspects of the job the hiring manager may address, and how your experience fits the job. You may not know how well you stand with the hiring manager until a second interview, but being prepared at the first interview with a list of references who can be called right away will demonstrate how prepared you are.

The Artificial Pancreas Project

The Artificial Pancreas Project The Artificial Pancreas Project When a chemical process stream goes bad, you call in the engineers. But thats in industry. What do you do when theres a glitch in one of the human bodys most complex and delicately balanced biochemical processes: the regulation of blood sugar levels? Engineering has a vital role to play in improving that process too. So in 2005, medical science called in the engineers to help address the diabetes epidemic. Diabetes is the result of a defective pancreasan organ gland that pumps the hormones insulin and glucagon to stabilize blood sugar levels. Looked at another way, the pancreas is a pump, controlled by sophisticated real-time monitoring systems, with biocomputational algorithms that let the two systems communicate. For people with insulin-dependent diabetes, life can feel like an ongoing struggle to monitor diet, check blood sugar, and administer injections. For physicians coping with the mounting diabetes epidemic, its an ongoing battle to help patients fend off heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, amputations, and other life-threatening complications of high blood sugar, as well as the risk of sudden death when blood sugar dips too low. Enter the Artificial Pancreas. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) launched its Artificial Pancreas Project six years ago to stimulate the development of a practical, mechanical, and artificial pancreas. The JDRF formed a global consortium of academic and government researchers and private corporations to carry out an orchestrated research and development agenda leading toward a functioning first-generation device. Both the glucose monitor and insulin delivery system must be discrete. Image courtesy of ACCU-CHEK Building a Bridge Although not a cure for diabetes, the artificial pancreas would provide a life-saving bridge to diabetics while researchers pursue a cellular-level solution. Like all bridges, its success will hinge on feats of engineering. We will have (mechanical) solutions in next few years that will dramatically reduce the risk of diabetic complications and dramatically make life significantly easier, said Dr. Aaron Kowalski, assistant vice president of treatment therapies at JDRF. What well evolve toward is biomechanical approaches, such as beta cell regeneration and diabetes vaccination. A self-regulating system, the artificial pancreas would monitor blood sugar levels continuously and automatically release the right amount of insulin at the right times, effectively automating the daily management of diabetes. As with any complex real-time process control problem, the engineering challenges in the quest for an artificial pancreas are many and multidisciplinary. The first major breakthroughs were the invention of the insulin pump and the mechanical continuous glucose monitor, which measure blood glucose levels in real time, review trends and fluctuations, and issue alerts when levels rise or fall beyond safe limits. The engineering task at hand was to further miniaturize, integrate, and automate these technologies. Smaller Is Better The ultimate device must be small enough to go unnoticed, robust enough to operate with minimal patient intervention, and accurate enough to permit complex therapeutic protocols. Miniaturization is key. Both the glucose monitor and the insulin delivery system must be discrete, with many vital components able to be implanted or worn just below the skin for long periods of time. Researchers must answer questions about how and where to place these devices in the body for optimal effect. They also must develop algorithms that translate the glucose measurements into highly precise and dynamic changes in the delivery of insulin to account for glucose-altering functions like eating and exercise. Research is driven by a JDRF-funded Artificial Pancreas Consortium including diabetes researchers, engineers, and biochemists from nine institutions in the U.S. and Europe. All participants are required to share their findings with the consortium. The JDRFs objective is to produce a prototype that works, has been tested and validated, and improves the lives of todays patients. However, the larger vision is to stimulate a vibrant commercial marketplace in these new devices that would continually drive improvements in performance and user-friendliness. Michael MacRae is an independent writer. For people with insulin-dependent diabetes, life can feel like an ongoing struggle to monitor diet, check blood sugar, and administer injections.

How Far Back Should a Resume Go Tips from 5x Certified Resume Writer

How Far Back Should a Resume Go Tips from 5x Certified Resume Writer How Far Back Should a Resume Go Tips from 5x Certified Resume Writer When it comes to writing a resume, many struggle with deciding how far back to go, what to include, and what not to include as part of your career history. I am an advocate of devoting the majority of the “real estate” on your resume to what happened in the past 15 years. In this article, I’ll present the case for and against this stance, discuss some workarounds that might work for everyone, and throw in my two cents on what to include on LinkedIn. Why you might only go back 15 years on a resume In my experience, when readers (recruiters or hiring managers) start learning about roles that happened more than 15 years ago, and they see the dates associated with them, their brains unwittingly go down a rabbit hole. The rabbit hole is filled with questions like “I wonder how old this person is?” or “I wonder how old their kids are?” In my view, the rabbit hole is more of a “human nature” idiosyncrasy than an intentional age discrimination issue. Furthermore, whether we like it or not, age discrimination does exist. Limiting your resume to your last 15 years can help mitigate this barrier to hiring, demonstrate that your most relevant experience is recent and that you’ve kept up with current workplace trends. If your experience is older than 15 years but isn’t vital or relevant to the role you’re targeting, consider cutting it. (Whether or not you want to work for a company that doesn’t value your years of experience is a topic for another conversation.) As an executive resume writer I strive to create a document that is timeless so that the reader does not know at first glance if my client is 35 or 75. How to show more than 15 years experience on a resume For many the idea of not including earlier experience, particularly when they perceive it as critical to who they are today, is a tough pill to swallow. In addition, there are times when earlier roles lend additional credibility to a candidate’s skills or showcase some additional skill diversity that otherwise wouldn’t have been known. The workaround I am a huge proponent of including an “Earlier Experience” category when the experience from prior to 15 years enhances the narrative or story I have crafted. Here are 3 examples of this: 1) My client is a military vet and the armed forces experience will resonate with the reader. 2) The job titles associated with my client’s earlier experience show that they learned an industry from the ground up, indicating to the reader that they understand its quirks or nuances. 3) When my client is trying to show their skills are transferable across industries, there is value in “name dropping,” as many times company names are enough to indicate a particular industry. How an earlier experience section works The process I follow when creating an earlier experience section that includes roles from 15+ years prior is as follows: Earlier Experience Example #1 Identify: Determine which roles, if any, advance or reinforce the story I am trying to tell. #2 Synopsize: Sometimes I don’t include anything more than the name and job title, but if there’s a noteworthy achievement, one line is more than enough to explain the point that makes this role worth including. #3 Remove Dates: In my experience, removing the dates helps the reader bypass the previously-discussed rabbit hole. A caveat: When a point from this “Earlier Experience” category is particularly noteworthy, I’ll make sure to reference it in the summary section at the top of page one, a technique that informs the reader while also offering a “tease” to incent them to continue to the bottom of page two. Addressing ATS concerns While still searchable by many applicant tracking systems (ATS), earlier experience without dates might not get accurately parsed into a digital applicant profile. When I want ATS to accurately parse what I’ve included in this section, I will in fact include the dates but change the text color to white â€" making them naked to the human eye on first glance and only unmasked when parsed into an ATS. However when dealing with ATS as the first job search point-of-entry (versus sending your resume to a recruiter or decision maker via email), my recommendation is to remove the dates altogether allowing the first 15 years of experience do the heavy lifting. Is your resume ATS friendly? Check it with Jobscan How far back to go on LinkedIn People read LinkedIn differently than they do resumes. When a reader has been hooked by a headline and a summary section, they then need to go the extra mile and keep on “clicking” to read earlier experience. Keeping this in mind, when experience older than 15 years is crucial to advancing the client’s story, I will include it along with the dates. If the experience doesn’t add any huge value-add, I’ll eliminate it and err on the side of working to keep someone timeless and avoid the potential for age bias as much as possible. A balancing act Determining how far back to go on a resume and LinkedIn requires a delicate balancing act â€" with human nature and age bias on the one side, and stories and career points that advance the brand or narrative you are looking to promote on the other. The workarounds I’ve shared should help to achieve some of that balance! 3 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Embarking on a Management Career

3 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Embarking on a Management Career 3 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Embarking on a Management Career In truth, however, this question may be on its way out. Moving into management is no longer the only way out of a potential career dead end. In many companies today, employees  can move sideways, rather than upward, to enrich their careers and broaden their horizons. Alternatively, they can climb up specialist ladders, which lead to higher status without putting people in managerial roles. Overall, it seems  that many employees are  realizing they dont  have to become managers to advance their careers. A 2009 study from Randstad  found that more than  half of workers didnt want to move into management roles. Entry-level workers now have more choice than ever in their career options. Do they want to move upwards or sideways? Do they want to become specialists or managers? And so, rather than asking the age-old question of, How can I move up into management?, employees now ask a different question: Do I want to move into management? For workers who find themselves pondering whether or not management is right for them, I offer the following three questions. Answer them honestly before you make any decisions about moving  up the corporate ranks. 1. Can You Handle an Uncertain Environment? One of the things that people dislike about being on the shop floor, so to speak, is being told what to do all the time.  If you move  up the management ladder, on the other hand, youll find that you become more and more autonomous with each rung. However, with this autonomy comes increasing uncertainty. When youre a manager, things arent as black and white as they seemed when you were a junior worker. Theres no instruction manual. No one person has all the answers. You may never feel you  have enough information to make the best decisions. The pressure of managerial autonomy is  very different from the pressure of junior-employee obedience and not everyone enjoys or thrives in this sort of climate. Before deciding to take a crack at ascending the management chain, ask yourself whether or not you enjoy uncertainty. Do you want to  forge your own clear path through chaos where none existed before you? Do you have the skills  to be effective in a managerial environment? If not, are you confident you could develop them? If you can give a resounding Yes to most of these questions, then a management career may be right for you. Otherwise,  you may want to reconsider your career path. 2. Do You Enjoy Playing the Political Game? No matter where you fall in a companys chain of command, youll have to deal with workplace politics. However, you will find that the political machinations intensify as you go up the ladder. If you want to go into management, expect to spend much less of your time focusing on tasks and much  more of your time on greasing wheels, forging alliances, wining and dining, etc., etc. Research from FSU professor Pamela Perrewé  found that a  person rarely gets promoted without having developed strong political skills. If you excel at and  enjoy playing the  political game, then a management career is probably a great option for you. If politics is not your thing, you probably should stay away from management at least for the moment. 3. Do You Even Enjoy Managing People? Many people fall into management careers without even considering  whether or not they actually enjoy managing people. These people just see management as the next logical step, and they kind of sleepwalk into it. As a result, you can find many a frustrated manager who doesnt enjoy being away from the action. These managers dont want to be assigning work to others; theyd rather be writing code, doing design, or crafting content. Prior to applying for a management post, you have to ask yourself if you even have a desire to do the kind of work that management entails.  If you dont really want to do the dirty work of managing well, then you dont want to be a manager. If, after reading all of this, you find that you are still not totally sure about whether or not management is right for you, then you may want to  see if  there is a low-risk opportunity for you to try out a management role within your business. For example, you could  act as a team leader for the duration of one project, or even move up to a management role with the stipulation that, if it doesnt work out, you can return to your old role. (Such a stipulation will need to be negotiated beforehand, of course.) Also, just because management isnt right for you at this moment, that doesnt mean it wont be right  for you later on down the line.  Just make sure you ask yourself these questions any and every time you consider moving into management.
